Day Four

The Secret Heart

Scripture:

“Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.”  Psalm 51:6 ESV

Thought:

What is the secret heart mentioned in this passage?  It is the secret place of emotion and pure truth between God and man, where we commune with Him in the deepest way.  It is a place of intimacy.  It is a place of transparency and honesty.  It is a place of the deepest repentance we can experience.  But it is also the place of the most thorough washing, regeneration and restoration we could ever have.  The secret heart is the best place to be in our relationship with God, for we enter His throne room and get His complete attention ... and we know it.  Have you gone to this place in your fellowship with God?

David wrote this Psalm, and he did so after he had Bathsheba’s husband killed because he had an affair with her, and she became pregnant.  He was caught, confronted and shaken with the reality of his sin, and he was in deep remorse.  What we see in this narrative is a man who betrayed a man loyal to him and his God who loves him.  He was shamefully broken and repented honestly.  He was completely sincere before the Lord.  We read his pain, and his shame in this Psalm that he wrote.  It was in this place of true repentance before God that he discovered his secret heart.  Where else could he or should he go to find this except his ABBA?

Application:

I’ve been there and it is a painfully right place to be.  Otherwise I would have wallowed in my sin and shame until this day.  However, PAPA doesn’t want me to wallow in my repentance and never get beyond my shame.  He wants repentance to be done right so that I can truly get beyond it.  When He says that He will remove my sin against Him and remember it no more, He is giving me permission to do the same.  But not until I have found my secret heart and have owned my sin and have become broken and contrite before Him.  Then He restores my fellowship with Him, as He did with David.  The secret heart is painful but a good place to be.

Response:

PAPA I know that You do not remember my sins against You, but I often do.  I have a powerful adversary who reminds me of my past shame and this Accuser does what he does … he accuses.  But he is a liar and my enemy, for he is Your enemy.  His work is to cause doubt and tell me that You cannot forgive like You say You do.  He wants me to see Your love and forgiveness to be conditioned on my worthiness, and as a result it causes me to feel that I can ever deserve your forgiveness.  If I believe this lie of the Accuser, then I fall into his trap, and I can never leave my shame.  But the truth is You do forgive like You say You do, and I am completely washed clean so that I can leave my past sins behind and never take them back.

I thank You for the gift of Your grace to me.  Now may I embrace Your grace thoroughly and let it always be in my mind and my heart, so that I will not hear the Accuser’s voice.  It is in Jesus name that I request this.
