It’s a New Day: A Sailboat Letter to God

Those who have been on The Journey know of our special session on the Holy Spirit which incorporates an analogy of our life being a Sailboat. From time to time, Guides will submit a letter to us which they thought was worthy of sharing. Such is the case with this one.

With my hand lightly on the Tiller and gazing out to the Eastern horizon, the morning sun rises with fresh vitality.  Its rays cast a golden hew over the large, white sail above me with its bright crimson cross on display in the full volume of the wind.

“My son, we will travel far today.”  The voice just behind me possessed gentle tones, but included that unique, adventurous note I’ve come to relish.  The unmistakable voice of my heavenly Father.

Now under His shadow with the fresh morning breeze at my back, He placed His left Hand on mine on the Tiller and His right Hand on my shoulder.  Everything was as it ought to be and the joy welling up within me was flooding every fiber of my being with a peace that I didn’t even try to understand.  I just let it fill me.

In the next moments, my Father laid out in broad terms, the Order of the Day.  “Love others as I have loved you!”  Without looking, I could hear His smile as He spoke these words.  I could hear His passion especially when He lingered on the word: love.  He continued, explaining that the Holy Spirit would guide and empower me as evidenced by His Presence in my sail.  He especially reminded me to focus on the bright crimson cross, the symbol of the redemption that Christ Jesus paid for with His own blood for me.  “For no greater love can be expressed than for one man to lay down his life for another.”  Each of His words inspired me and His tone filled me with a vigor, a courage, a confidence, not of my own, but His.

“Father,” I responded, “guide me with your Hand on mine and help me be fearless in navigating the currents, especially those that try to push and pull me off of the course that You have set for me today.”

“Holy Spirit, fill my sail with your power, your love, and your sound judgment for the glory of Christ Jesus my Lord.  Amen!”

Father,

The mystery of You existing as the Supreme One True Godhead is complex- what an understatement!  You, as my Abba in heaven, I have come to relate to.  Jesus, as the Second Person who is the complete expression of You, Father,  to me makes sense as well.  The fact that He became a human, God and Man simultaneously for the purpose of my redemption is beyond amazing and miraculous; but also makes sense.  Only You could dream up such a plan!  The victory that He achieved is total and stands for all time.  Now, I begin to understand that the Holy Spirit is my seal of that victory, the first installment of the inheritance which You have promised and will amply supply in due time.  And, until that time, He is my Helper guiding me into all your truth, reminding me of everything that you, Jesus, have spoken to me.  I will know His Presence because He will glorify You, Jesus.  He will empower me to obey Your commands to love.  I will know Him by His fruit in my life.  I will sense His Presence as He prays through me and for me according to Your perfect Will.  His Joy is and will be mine as He leads me into all the righteousness and peace of Your everlasting kingdom.  Yes, He is the life in Christ Jesus that sets me free from the law of sin and death!

Holy Spirit, lead me into all truth.  Lead me in the way everlasting.

Father, pour out Your love within our hearts through the Holy Spirit You have given us.  Thank you, Jesus!  For, by your sacrifice for us, You have made all this abundantly possible!
