THURSDAY- Father Knows Best
Jesus told Peter to walk on water. (Matthew 14:27-29)
God told Abraham to kill his son as a sacrifice. (Genesis 22)
God told Gideon to fight an army with only 300 men. (Judges 7)
God told Joshua to take Jericho by marching around its walls, blowing trumpets. (Joshua 6)
The Lord told Ananias to go find Saul, the man who wanted to murder Christ-followers, and pray for him. (Acts 9)
Once we have decided to trust the Lord, to give Him our life, the next great test will be whether we will obey Him. Above I have given you but a few examples where God asked His people to do seemingly crazy things. It is in times like this that we will see whether we really do trust Him.
For me, I decided to trust the Lord 100%. Then, I had to walk it out, even when my house in Tulsa wasn't selling, even when we were running out of time to get a house in Arkansas before school started, even when financial provision looked shaky, even when Satan came with many doubts and fears.
Obedience is the barometer of your Trust.
Why is this? It is because the Father has a plan for your life. Rick Warren was right. You were created with a Purpose. As long as you are trying to call the shots, to strategize your plan, to cast your own vision, to dream your own dreams, you will be stifled. But when you reach the end of yourself, you begin to see His vision for your life. In Hebrews 11, it says all the great people of faith saw this vision from afar. He will test you by challenging you to take steps of faith toward this vision, and it will feel like stepping onto water and believing the water will support you.
You stand on the edge of the boat and consider this bold step. You look back to your comfort zone and consider turning back, but you remember that you pledged Him your 100% trust, and it's time to prove that. Jesus said:
"No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." Luke 9:62 NIV
Ouch! Jesus wants devoted, bold Disciples to join Him in His work, not lukewarm, timid, fearful followers. He also told His Disciples:
"As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain (abide) in My love. If you obey My commands, you will remain (abide) in My love, just as I have obeyed My Father's commands and remain (abide) in His love...This is my command: Love each other." John 15:9-10, 17 NIV
As we abide in Him and trust in Him, we begin to look and act like Jesus. Then, we start to see the ultimate act of Obedience is Love. More tomorrow.
